Explanation of Titles
Sempai:
Is the highest present colored belt (kyu-grade) in the dojo (with equal grade the one oldest in age is the Sempai). Sempai means literally “teacher”; someone with a black belt 1e Dan (shodan) or 2nd Dan (nidan) with one or two golden bars.
Sensei:
Shihan:
Is literally translated as grand master, someone with a black belt 5th dan (godan) with five golden bars, and a 6 dan (rokudan) with six golden bars or a red/white belt, and a 7 dan (sichidan) with seven golden bars or a red/white belt.
Hanshi:
Is literally translated as doctor or professor, someone with a black belt 8 dan (hachidan) with 8 golden bars or a red belt, and a 9e dan (kudan) with nine golden bars or a red belt.
Kancho:
Is a title which indicates that someone is the founder of their own style, recognized in most countries and the Japanese federation. Usually a red belt but also can be a black belt with 10 golden bars (judan).
Kaicho:
Is a title of honor assigned from Japan by other Kancho’s, because he holds the highest possible rank in the world of martial arts, mostly a red belt but sometimes also a black belt with 10 golden bars.
